The Wetlands Reserve Program is a voluntary program that gives landowners the opportunity to protect, restore, and enhance wetlands on their property, with technical and financial support from USDA/NRCS. This project involved a 600-acre area that had previously been drained for farming and cattle ranching.
Restoring Wetland Functions and Habitat
The goal was to better control drainage across the project area, promote a more natural hydroperiod, restore onsite wetlands, and improve wildlife habitat. Work consisted of clearing and grubbing, structure removal, excavation, earthfill, redevelopment of a meandering portion of a creek, geocell installation for low-water crossings, installation of a ConTech bridge, riprap installation, and seeding and mulching.
